After giving back the glorious\u00a0Yeti SB 5.5<\/a>\u00a0I’ve built up a\u00a0new\u00a0beast that will keep me company for the coming year: a Mondraker Foxy 29 carbon.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I’ve already tested the bike a few months ago, but the results of that test (in short: I liked it a lot) prompted me to ask\u00a0the Italian distributor for\u00a0a frame to\u00a0build up with custom components that you’ll find in several tests\u00a0over the coming months.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The frame is the\u00a0flagship offering with a\u00a0Fox X2 coil sprung rear shock with lever for a speedy lockout,\u00a0set to my weight: 30% of sag and with any type of adjustment you could wish for.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The frame is big on detail, even\u00a0though the internal cable routing is not guided and required a little ‘patience’ during assembly.\u00a0The cable ports\u00a0are solid and help to avoid any rattling in the frame.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The suspension system is the classic “Zero System” from Mondraker, while the\u00a0chainstay’s angle\u00a0is perfectly matched to that of the down tube, if you look at it from the side. Aesthetically, it’s one of the best\u00a0designs that I’ve seen on the market today.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Detail on the carbon fiber bridge\u00a0that connects the two linkage plates\u00a0which drive the shock.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Mondraker uses “Forward Geometry”.\u00a0They were first to have adopted a more extreme approach to the whole “long reach, short stem” idea.\u00a0The reach of Foxy is 470mm in size medium, in test, while the stem is very short, at only 30mm.\u00a0Other geometry here<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The attachment of the rear brake caliper is rather unconventional.\u00a0They are the new\u00a0Hayes Dominion<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0A4, with 180mm rotors in front and back.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For assembly I shortened both cables and bled the system. It was easy to do,\u00a0you can even use\u00a0Avid \/ Sram syringes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The\u00a0drivetrain is an Eagle X01 1 \u00d7 12 SRAM with\u00a0Race Face Next R<\/a>\u00a0crankset and a 32-tooth chainring. The pedals are\u00a0Crank Brothers Mallet E<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On the left crank you can see the Race Face Cinc powermeter, which\u00a0I will follow up with a long term\u00a0test on.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I mounted my favorite wheels of the moment, those would be\u00a0the new Crank Brothers Synthesis<\/a>\u00a0E11.\u00a0The tire knobs are\u00a0extremely massive and aggressive, with the\u00a0Specialized Butcher 2.3 BLCK DMND<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0They weigh about 1,150 grams each, but their performance is really up there, as you will soon read in a dedicated test.\u00a0The\u00a0rear tire\u00a0has no logos because it’s a prototype.<\/p>\n

The fork is a Factory 36 with 160mm of\u00a0travel and a 44mm offset.\u00a0Get ready for a comparison with the\u00a0new Lyrik<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

155mm\u00a0Yep Components Uptimizer 2.0<\/a>\u00a0dropper\u00a0seatpost<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Abundant space for the rear tire’s clearance.<\/p>\n

The saddle is a Sella Fizik Aliante. It’s not marketed purely to MTB, but I liked it a lot during the\u00a0Grail Canyon<\/a>\u00a0test, especially on long rides, so I decided to mount it here.<\/p>\n

The handlebar is a\u00a0Race Face Next R<\/a>\u00a0– 800mm wide.\u00a0It’s the same one I had mounted on my Yeti SB-5.5, with a diameter of 35mm, while the grips are the\u00a0Ergon GE1 Evo<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The valves are from\u00a0Milkit<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

The weight of the complete bike without pedals is 13.9kg.\u00a0but keep in mind,\u00a0the tires and rims are really massive and downhill oriented, I also have another set of lighter wheels that\u00a0will drop the weight down to 13.3 kg.\u00a0Fox is also sending me an air shock to cut another 300 grams.<\/p>\n
